    PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Being a parent is one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences a person can have. For many parents, raising their own children gives them an opportunity for self-understanding by allowing them to reflect on their own upbringing, as well as their aspirations for their children. This self-reflection often leads to new awareness, acceptance of the past and, ultimately, personal growth.

However, for parents who suffer with mental health issues or are raising children affected by trauma or disability, parenting can be daunting and even overwhelming. It can bring high levels of stress and isolation to parents’ daily lives.  Parents are more likely to become emotionally overwhelmed by these increased demands, placing them at risk for mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Mood disorders can seriously impact parents’ ability to care for their children and support their social and emotional development consistently. When parents become unable to cope with the demands of parenting, they are less likely to develop healthy relationships with their children, which is crucial for healthy child development.
